Volunteering

So, I don’t have a whole ton to report today. I somehow forgot to take “foodie” pics over the last 24 hours –  but we had pasta with tomato sauce, shrimp and feta for dinner last night – and it was delicious.

I’m feeling a lot better about things out here today – I’ve had a relaxing day so far, watched a few Friends DVD’s this morning and slept in nice and late – I’d call that a pretty good start to a Friday.

The boy also had his initial review at his job yesterday and got a nice bonus out of it – which was a nice surprise and I guess that means they like him :). Much to his dismay, I think he might actually be slowly turning over a new leaf and moving from the student to professional mindset. I know this because he said he thinks he might spend some of his newfound wealth on “work clothes”.  This is EPIC people, EPIC. He is actually going to let me take him shopping, and maybe – just maybe – one of these days the beer shirts will disappear all together. I love it when he dresses up, so this whole “working professional” thing is a nice perk.

Things have been looking up a bit for me job-wise in the last day or so as well, but nothing is confirmed and I refuse to get my hopes up over this stuff. Whatever happens, happens.

I also spent most of last night working on some volunteer stuff I had offered to assist with. I gotta say, I have a newfound appreciation for volunteering, since I moved out here. Its becoming a great way for me to meet people, and because I like to be busy 24/7 – its helping a little in that department as well.

I’ve volunteered before, but I’ve always had a hard time balancing full-time work and that in the past – but I’m definitely going to make it more of a priority in my life.

Anyways, I think tonight we might make a quick dinner at home (*yay* for cost-effectiveness), but after we’ll probably hit up Boston Pizza for a few drinks and appetizers. Honestly, drinks and apps is probably my favorite way to spend an evening – totally low-key, good food, and yummy beverages – what could be better?

Do you volunteer? What do you like about it? What keeps you coming back?

More Pumpkin

So folks – I think I need more pumpkin in my life.

Look at that big fella – Mmm Mmm Good!

Anyways, I decided to take it easy yesterday afternoon and I hung out with a cup of Earl Grey Tea and Apples w/ PB and read for awhile.

Once the boy got home from work we got cracking on dinner, we were both kinda tired so we whipped up something quick. We decided on Salmon & Beans and Ryan came up with a quick sauce for the salmon that involved honey, soy sauce, lemon and garlic I believe. It was tasty, but a tad tart – to much lemon I think. I steamed some beans and then sauteed them for a few minutes in olive oil, S&P, lemon juice and added in some extra peppers and feta cheese we had kicking around.

Seriously, feta = AMAZING, it makes everything just a tad better. After dinner, I somehow got an extra burst of energy and decided to whip up some Pumpkin Pie Cupcakes while watching Dragon’s Den with Ryan. (Dragon’s Den is basically the same thing as the US show Shark Tank – I think it was adapted off the Canadian show).  Some of the people that go on the show are CRAAZY, but a lot of them have great ideas – its super entertaining to watch, though.

The pumpkin pie cupcakes were amazingly good – Ryan downed two within about a minute and I told him he should bring some into work for his buddies and he told me “nope, I’m not sharing” – so I guess I should take that as a good sign – despite the fact that my boy is a little greedy :S.

I think the funniest part is in the 2nd picture – we couldn’t find any “regular” muffin cups – so I bought the only thing there. The Disney Princess ones. I got great satisfaction out of making the boy eat “girlie cupcakes”. Anyways, I may or may not have had one with breakfast this morning 😛

Today, I got up early and made myself a bowl of oats and some tea.

Following this, I did a 20 minute Yoga Sculpt class from YogaDowload and it made me impressively exhausted for only 20 minutes.  Around lunchtime today, I had to take the car in for its final “Alberta” test – an out of province review, after which I can finally get a local license plate and be done with all the car stuff that comes with moving. Its basically a giant money pit – but I’m glad its almost done.

So I’m just waiting for that to finish up, and currently enjoying a quick cup of coffee – I’m hoping it will be done shortly.

What do you guys think about car expenses? Do you ever feel like your paying too much?

Run It Out

Happy Hump Day Everyone!

So I haven’t gotten up to a whole lot over the past day or so. Yesterday’s meals were pretty unexciting. I had the same thing for lunch and dinner – how LAME! I made another quick and easy fav… Tortellini Soup. My old roommate is Italian, and got me hooked on this (among many other fabulously delicious meals) when I lived with her. Really simple, just chicken broth + tortellini pasta + S&P + parmesan cheese. Its pretty darn good. 🙂

Yesterday afternoon I spent some time on job stuff and relaxed a bit by catching up on my Google Reader. Ryan came home from work and we both had quick dinner because he still wasn’t feeling very well, and I was just being lazy. Aren’t leftovers great for that?

Anyways, after watching The Biggest Loser, I sat down and had a chat with Ryan.

It sort of turned into an emotional ‘meltdown’ over how I thought things would be easier out here once I moved – I thought I would get a job sooner, I thought meeting people would be easier – and I feel really guilty for the position that I’ve put us in. Ryan has reassured me countless times not to stress over this stuff – but I just feel a need to contribute and I don’t feel like I’m doing a very good job of that right now. Anyways, I guess I should give myself some credit for moving across the country to a province where we knew virtually no one. It was a big risk, and I don’t regret moving, but I guess it will take some more time to get settled than I thought. :S

Oh well – such is life, and honestly – I could have it a lot worse.

This morning, I woke up eager to get my mind off of last nights conversation, so I ate a quick breakfast of greek yogurt + museli, with toast +PB and then headed out to the gym.

I did a easy paced run, pounding out 3.5 miles in 35 minutes and it was actually pretty relaxing.

Honestly, I feel like the gym (& running in particular) is the ONE thing in my life that I can do to take my mind off stress and anxiety. Somehow, I end up focusing on the pain of running and how much that hurts and it outweighs any other ‘STUFF’.

Anyways, I think we’re gonna make some salmon and green beans for dinner tonight – and I might even try out those pumpkin pie cupcakes later. I’ll let you know how it goes.

What areas of your  life cause you the most stress? What to you do to feel more at ease?

Holy Cars = Expensive

Hi Hi, sorry for the delay in posting! Its been a busy few days out here 🙂

I am happy to report that our movers arrived early last Thursday morning, and let me tell you, the boy and I were both BEYOND excited to get our kitchen stuff and be able to finally start making some decent meals. I am nearing the end of the unpacking – its only what? … 4 days later now … that’s not too bad. The boy had a mild freak-out on the weekend over how many pairs of shoes and purses I shipped, I however – do not see a problem with this – they are very necessary in my life 🙂

In addition to that, my car (or Civi – as I call her) arrived around lunch on Friday – so it was a good 48 hours. I had to get cracking right away on getting her properly outfitted for Calgary weather. Right now we are in the midst of a hot week and today’s temperature was a high of +10 – which I’m quite enjoying – but I have a feeling it won’t last long. So I called around and got quotes on snow tires and a block heater so I’ll be prepared for the winter. But holy hell someone forgot to tell me how expensive all this stuff is! Ugh, not the best situation to be in when you are currently unemployed.

Other that figuring out the car and the unpacking, I’ve been touring around quite a bit. I hit a natural food store in the area last week, and it was amazing! Like a veggie paradise! I can’t get over how close everything is when you live downtown. I probably won’t even need the car that much, unless we’re buying house stuff or going for a big round of groceries. I also walked over to Kensington with the boy this weekend. Such a fun area with so many cute little boutique stores, needless to say – I can see myself doing a lot of shopping over there in the near future.

Last but not least, I got myself a gym membership. Its quite a bit more pricey than what I paid in London – and there is not nearly as many group classes – which is a bit of a piss off, but what can you do? I guess that’s how they do it out here. It’ll be good for me though, and give me a much needed distraction from job applications. I went for a 2 mile run on Saturday morning and it was ROUGH! That’s what I get for barely exercising over the past month. I got in a hell of a workout today though – 30 minutes on the elliptical, 40 minutes of weights and abs, and 20 minutes on the bike – I was exhausted. I think I’m slowly getting my workout mojo back though. I’ll keep you posted.

What workouts do you feel the best about afterwards?
